John J. Montgomery Elementary was abuzz recently as more than 75 volunteers, including 10 students, came out to “green” the campus by performing service work. The project commenced a year-long Green Schools Challenge implemented by the San Diego Green Building Council.
“The Green Apple initiative is just an amazing effort,” said Francisco Escobedo, Ed.D., Superintendent of Chula Vista Elementary School District. “Green Apple Day is going to transform Montgomery School and create a beautiful ambiance for our students to better understand nutrition and health.”
“The work at Montgomery Elementary will improve the learning environment for students and teachers to come – every child deserves a healthy and sustainable school,” stated Renée Daigneault, Interim Executive Director for the San Diego Green Building Council.
Balfour Beatty Construction led the efforts to recruit volunteers, obtain sponsors and in-kind donations, and manage the improvement projects. The SDGBC spearheaded the concept for a year-long Green Schools Challenge, which kicked-off with the student volunteers’ efforts at Saturday’s Green Apple Day of Service event.
Activities and beautification projects at Montgomery School included creating and planting a new student garden, painting a mural (with the help of a professional artist and students), new irrigation, weeding, and landscaping that added new mulch, fencing, plants, and walkways.
