Olympic View Elementary observed Veterans Day recently with a special awards assembly. Principal Gloria McKearney and Associate Principal Marissa Allan presented awards to student Super Citizens, and recognized military families that live in the neighborhood of the school and send their children to Olympic View. Special recognition was given to Navy Partners in Education, Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Five, for its service to our country and participation in school activities such as the Welcome Back to School BBQ, Fall Festival, and Awards assemblies. Safety Patrol members Paraded the Colors, everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and student essay contest winners, Malcolm and Kelvin O’Neil, Isabelle Jennings, and Chase Hartford shared their essays about their parents who have served in the U.S. Military and how they make them proud every day. It was a very emotional ceremony for some students whose parents are deployed; they introduced their parent with a picture of them in hand. Others were able to hug their parents after the ceremony.

A poem was read by Natalie Diaz, a USC intern who works with Olympic View military families. A morning coffee with all military families was scheduled and military organizations were on hand to provide information regarding available resources such as counseling and childcare.

Olympic View Elementary serves more than 150 students from military-connected families. These activities recognize the men and women and their families for their service to our country.
