AT&T national initiative supports teachers’ DonorsChoose requests at military-connected schools
In a surprise announcement, AT&T revealed that it has “flash funded” projects listed by San Diego County teachers on the DonorsChoose.org crowd-funding site, including all 19 projects in CVESD. AT&T selected the districts involved because of their military-connected schools, and high concentration of military-connected students.
“This is a great surprise from AT&T,” said CVESD Board President Glendora M. Tremper. “We want to let each veteran know that we appreciate their sacrifice. We want to reassure our veterans who are at sea or stationed abroad that their children are in good hands in our local schools. Their student’s education will only be further enhanced, thanks to the support of AT&T and DonorsChoose.”
AT&T’s flash funding in San Diego County is one of 11 initiatives announced on Tuesday, November 10 in military communities across the United States. Organizers said 189 emails went out to San Diego teachers letting them know that their DonorsChoose projects were funded. All told, AT&T is fulfilling more than 790 projects nationally, benefiting over 83,600 students with a total gift of more than $530,000.
In CVESD, about 9 percent of District students come from military connected families—a figure that is as high as 25 percent at some schools. AT&T’s announcement was made at CVESD’s Loma Verde Elementary School, where several teachers had submitted funding requests through DonorsChoose. The 19 projects in CVESD are being funded at a collective total of $16,691.
“As part of our support of our nation’s men and women of the military, this is one way we can say thank you to those who serve and their families,” said Ken McNeely, President of AT&T California. “We are thrilled to support these students as part of our ongoing commitment to education through AT&T Aspire and to military communities. We honor those who serve on Veterans Day and all year long.”
AT&T Aspire is the company’s signature education initiative that invests in students today – at home, in the classroom, and at work – to prepare them for success tomorrow. AT&T previously supported several DonorsChoose.org initiatives as part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s $350 million planned commitment to education.
